Biography

The story of Richard Branson, from the beginning.

01

Origins

Born in London in 1950, he's dyslexic and struggled in school; his headmaster famously predicted he'd either end up in prison or become a millionaire. At sixteen, he dropped out of school and founded “Student” magazine.

02

The turning point

From the magazine grew a mail-order record business, then the first Virgin store on Oxford Street, and in 1972, a recording studio in the countryside, where Mike Oldfield's “Tubular Bells” was recorded: five million copies sold and the birth of Virgin Records.

03

The rise

He signed the Sex Pistols, the Rolling Stones, and Culture Club, then in 1984, he made a crazy leap: Virgin Atlantic, an airline challenging British Airways, with just one leased plane. Over 400 companies followed, from trains to telecommunications, culminating in Virgin Galactic, with which he flew into space in 2021.

04

The method

He built a brand, not just a product: he enters sectors where customers are poorly treated, adds service and wit, protects against downside risk (“always protect the downside”), and puts people before customers, convinced that happy employees create happy customers.

05

Today and the legacy

Through Virgin Unite, he funds initiatives in climate, justice, and entrepreneurship. His legacy is the idea that a brand can span completely different sectors if it represents an attitude.
