Biography

The story of Jack Ma, from the beginning.

01

Origins

Born in Hangzhou in 1964 into a poor family, for nine years he cycled every morning to a tourist hotel to offer free guiding services, solely to learn English. He failed the university entrance exam twice, was rejected from dozens of jobs—including a KFC application where he was the only one of 24 candidates turned down—and became an English teacher earning $12 a month.

02

The turning point

In 1995, while traveling in the United States, he used the internet for the first time: he searched for “beer” and found nothing from China. He returned home convinced the web would transform the country and launched China Pages, which ultimately failed.

03

The rise

In 1999, in his apartment with 17 friends and $60,000, he founded Alibaba to connect small Chinese manufacturers to the global market. He survived the dot-com bubble, surpassed eBay in China with Taobao, created Alipay, and in 2014 brought Alibaba to Wall Street with the largest IPO in history: $25 billion.

04

The method

He hired for attitude, not just resumes, prioritized “customers first, employees second, shareholders third,” and viewed rejection as training: “if you don't give up, you still have a chance.”

05

Today and the legacy

He stepped down as chairman in 2019 to return to teaching and rural and educational philanthropy. He remains a symbol of how perseverance can matter more than recognized talent.
