Biography

The story of Bernard Arnault, from the beginning.

01

Origins

Born in Roubaix in 1949, he graduated from École Polytechnique in Paris, France's most selective engineering school, and joined the family construction business, which he reoriented towards real estate.

02

The turning point

In 1981, with the arrival of socialists, he moved to the United States. He returned in 1984 and, with $15 million of his own money plus support from Lazard, acquired the bankrupt textile group Boussac, whose sole jewel was Christian Dior. He sold everything else and kept the fashion house.

03

The rise

In 1989, through a series of audacious stock market maneuvers that earned him the nickname “the wolf in cashmere,” he seized control of LVMH. From there, he built an empire: Givenchy, Fendi, Sephora, Tag Heuer, Bulgari, Tiffany for $15.8 billion. Over 75 brands and Europe's largest company by market capitalization.

04

The method

His strategy: acquire brands with authentic histories, protect their creative heritage by entrusting it to free-thinking talents (Galliano, Jacobs, Slimane), and impose rigorous industrial discipline on distribution, pricing, and margins. No discounting: desire is built through scarcity.

05

Today and the legacy

He still leads LVMH with his five children integrated into the group. He effectively invented the modern concept of the luxury group.
