Biography
Born in 1926 on a farm in Småland, Sweden, he started at age five reselling matches bought wholesale in Stockholm, then moved on to seeds, pens, and postcards.
At seventeen, in 1943, he founded IKEA: an acronym of his initials, the Elmtaryd farm, and the village of Agunnaryd. He sold by mail order, adding furniture in 1948, produced by local carpenters.
Boycotted by competitors among Swedish suppliers, he turned to Poland, further lowering prices. In 1956, flat-pack furniture was conceived after an employee sawed off a table's legs to fit it into a car: this innovation forever changed home furnishings. IKEA now has over 400 stores in more than 50 countries.
Extreme frugality was a strategy, not a fad: he flew economy class, drove an old Volvo, and considered resource waste “the mortal sin.” The price was determined first, then the product was designed to meet it.
He passed away in 2018. He made good design accessible to hundreds of millions of people, proving that cost constraints can drive innovation.
