Biography
Born in 1938 into a French-Canadian family, he grew up in California as a falconer and climber. He self-taught metalworking to forge reusable rock pitons he needed for Yosemite.
He sold them from his car trunk for $1.50 each, living on canned food. In 1965, Chouinard Equipment was born, becoming the largest supplier of climbing gear in the United States.
When he realized his pitons were damaging rock walls, he removed them from his catalog at the peak of sales and introduced removable nuts. In 1973, he founded Patagonia: he switched to organic cotton in 1996, donated 1% of sales to environmental causes, and in 2011 published the ad “Don't Buy This Jacket.”
His philosophy: make the best possible product, cause no unnecessary harm, and use business to protect nature. Deliberately slow management, no public listing, and employees free to go surfing when the waves are good.
In 2022, he transferred 100% of Patagonia's ownership, valued at over $3 billion, to a trust and a non-profit organization: “Earth is now our only shareholder.” This is the most radical example of a business dedicated to a mission.
