Biography

The story of Stanley Druckenmiller, from the beginning.

01

Origins

He grew up in Pennsylvania and Virginia in a middle-class family; he dropped out of his economics Ph.D. program at Michigan and in 1977, joined Pittsburgh National Bank as a banking analyst, where by age 25 he was already leading equity research.

02

The turning point

In 1981, at 28, he founded Duquesne Capital with one million under management. His unconventional style caught the attention of George Soros, who entrusted him with the Quantum Fund in 1988.

03

The rise

He was the one who built and managed the short position against the pound in 1992, with Soros telling him to double it. He led Quantum for twelve years, then grew Duquesne to 12 billion before closing it in 2010, having achieved thirty consecutive years without a single losing year and an average of approximately 30% annually.

04

The method

Extreme concentration when conviction is high—“it takes courage to be a pig”—and the ability to reverse a position in a single day if the thesis breaks. He looks at central bank liquidity before earnings and uses markets as a signal system, not a prophecy.

05

Today and the legacy

Today, he manages his family office and the Duquesne Family Foundation, with hundreds of millions dedicated to education and healthcare in New York's underprivileged neighborhoods. He is considered to have the best risk-adjusted returns in hedge fund history.
