Biography

The story of Jim Simons, from the beginning.

01

Origins

Born in Massachusetts in 1938, he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics at Berkeley at 23, worked as a codebreaker for the NSA during the Cold War, and was fired for publicly opposing the Vietnam War.

02

The turning point

He chaired the mathematics department at Stony Brook and in 1974, published the Chern-Simons theory with Chern, which is now fundamental in theoretical physics. Then, in his forties, he left academia for currency trading, convinced that hidden regularities existed in prices.

03

The rise

In 1982, he founded Renaissance Technologies, hiring not economists, but mathematicians, physicists, astronomers, and computational linguists. The Medallion Fund, launched in 1988, generated approximately 66% gross annual returns for thirty years—the best track record ever recorded. The fund was closed to external investors and reserved for employees.

04

The method

No intuition, no stories: just clean data, thousands of weak statistical signals combined, automated execution, very short horizons, and maniacal risk control. “We never ask why it works; we ask if it works on the data.”

05

Today and the legacy

He donates billions to mathematical research and autism through the Simons Foundation. He passed away in 2024, having demonstrated that rigorously applied science outperforms intuition.
