Biography
Growing up in Boston, he earned a math degree from Bowdoin College, then joined the Peace Corps to teach math in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), and later received a master's in computer science from Stanford.
In 1991, he founded Pure Software, a company providing developer tools, which he took public and sold in 1997 for $750 million. He recounts getting the idea for Netflix after being fined $40 for returning “Apollo 13” late.
In 1997, he launched, with Marc Randolph, a mail-order DVD rental service based on subscriptions with no late fees. Blockbuster famously declined to buy Netflix for $50 million in 2000 and would go bankrupt ten years later. Streaming arrived in 2007, and in 2013, “House of Cards” ushered in original production: now over 280 million subscribers worldwide.
“Freedom and responsibility”: no vacation policies, no expense approvals, top-of-market salaries, radically honest feedback, and a “keeper test” for every role. Cannibalize your own business before someone else does.
He stepped down as CEO in 2023, remaining Executive Chairman. His company culture, published in a document read over 20 million times, transformed how Silicon Valley manages people.
